Musical sensory garden for children with autism
Enghaveskolen in Odense has inaugurated their brand new music playground with Percussion Play's outdoor instruments. The music playground is supposed to have a positive effect on the development of children with autism at the school. The day was celebrated with soda, balloons and singing. The string was cut and then the instruments were to be tested.
"Children and young people with autism have challenges within social interaction, communication and imagination. All children will develop within these three areas if we could get a project underway - a form of musical sensory garden."
Gitte Breese, Pediatrician, Enghaveskolen
The new playground is specially made for Enghaveskolen, a special school for students with profound developmental disorders, most of whom have autism. Gitte Breese was responsible for writing and submitting the application to Tryg-Fonden, which has donated 75,000 kroner to the project. School principal Jørgen Schoop is incredibly excited about the new instruments and can already see how the children have accepted them. What Jørgen experiences is that the children themselves can go and play with the instruments, they awaken, among other things, the sense of touch and make it possible for the children to add something else to their play. The instruments in the new music playground are more robust than those they use in the music room, but the plan is for the music teacher to use the new outdoor musical instruments in teaching.
