Ground instruments are outdoor musical instruments that are integrated into the surface or close to ground level, so that the sound can be felt in the body as well as heard. When you walk, step, jump or hit the surfaces, deep vibrations, rhythmic sounds and tactile experiences arise that invite play, movement and sensory integration. They are particularly suitable where users need to be able to participate standing, sitting, with a walker, wheelchair or as part of a more sensory music environment. Ground instruments fit well in schools, day care institutions, special areas, elderly care, sensory gardens, paths and public spaces, where they can be used for both spontaneous musical play, rhythmic activities, motor training and shared experiences.
