Sound effect instruments are outdoor musical instruments that create short, characteristic and often surprising sounds – e.g. rustling, clicking, hissing, creaking or deep sounds that stand out from the more classic melodic and rhythmic instruments. They function as small sound signals, details and “experience points” that invite curiosity, experimentation and close-up sensing. Sound effect instruments are an obvious complement to larger music environments in schools, day care institutions, special areas, elderly care as well as parks and urban spaces, where they can be used to create variation, rhythmic patterns, sound stories and small surprises along the route. They can stand alone as small stopping points or be integrated into trails, sensory gardens and playgrounds, where they give users the opportunity to explore sound, timing and cause–effect in a playful way and thus strengthen both attention, motor skills and creativity.
