Tollund School uses outdoor musical instruments to create an alternative learning space
At Tollund School in Silkeborg Municipality, the management has chosen to think in new ways when it comes to learning and well-being. Inspired by outdoor musical instruments at the School Principals' Annual Meeting, school principal Charlotte and her colleagues took the initiative to create a sensory and musical learning environment in the school's outdoor space.
Today, the instruments are used as an active part of both teaching and children's leisure time.
A safe and accessible community
Because the instruments are always ready, they have become a natural gathering point – both during breaks and during lessons. The students visit the area themselves, practice voluntarily and create musical experiences together. The colors of the instruments make it easier to understand the notes, which strengthens the participation of all children – even those without prior musical experience.
"It's not about how good it sounds – it's about the process. That the children create something together, listen to each other and are part of a community."
Casper Zimmermann, Educational Director at Tollund School in Silkeborg Municipality
A room with high ceilings
The instruments give students the opportunity to learn in new ways. Many children with physical restlessness find peace and focus when they can move freely and be musically active at the same time. It is a space where they experience success – even those who otherwise have difficulty finding their feet in a traditional classroom.
A vibrant part of the school day
The instruments are in use all day long. They provide a framework for music lessons, educational activities and spontaneous games. Music has moved out of the music room and into the community – also at events where parents and the local community are invited to join in the music.
Part of the learning environment of the future
The school now sees potential in expanding the area with more instruments and creating a closer connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The plan is to place the instruments even closer to the music room, thus making the outdoor music room an integrated part of the school's pedagogical practice.
